No hard boundary

One of the recurring visual facts of the Varanasi photographs is the absence of a clean boundary between explicitly religious activity and day-to-day life. A shrine may open directly onto a street. Sacred imagery may occupy the same wall beside which someone plays, waits or works.

The photograph does not need to turn the everyday action into a religious symbol. Its documentary value lies in showing how the two kinds of presence coexist.

Prayer can also appear as a private act within a public environment. The doorway frames the worshipper, but the surrounding wall, street and architecture remain part of what the photograph records.

Elsewhere the public landscape becomes a setting for stillness. Meditation and contemplation do not stop the life of the ghats around them; they become one rhythm among many.
