India — Founding Documentary Journey
Photographs of people living their lives — at work, in company, in prayer, at play. Each encounter opens onto a world of its own.
A badminton player reaches overhead in front of a painted image of Ganesha. In Varanasi, sacred imagery and day-to-day activity often occupy the same public space.

Everyday Lives begins with people, each with a life of their own. Everyday does not mean ordinary. There are no ordinary people, only people living everyday lives.
Work, family, faith, rest, celebration, humour and routine. These experiences may be familiar, but each person lives them differently.
Our journey begins in India. In Varanasi, boats cross the Ganges, people gather on the steps, and narrow lanes open onto work, prayer, play and conversation.
The photographs offer brief encounters. A face, a gesture, a moment between people. There is always more to a life than a photograph can hold.
Documentary in truth. Emotional in experience. The archive brings together photographs, videos, sounds and recollections, with context to explore whenever something catches your interest.
For now, there is time to look, to listen, and to see what stays with you.
The experience
Everyday Lives begins with people, each with a life of their own. “Everyday” does not mean “ordinary”: there are no ordinary people, only people living everyday lives. The photographs offer glimpses of work, family, faith, rest, celebration, humour and routine — shared experiences lived in individual ways.
The journey begins in India. In Varanasi, it follows the Ganges, the ghats and the narrow lanes, with time for prayer, play, conversation and encounters along the way.
Behind the photographs is a growing archive of records, recollections and cultural context, there to explore whenever something catches your interest.
Documentary in truth. Emotional in experience.
Founding journey
India is the first major body of work in Everyday Lives. The Varanasi journey brings together photographs, encounters and context from the city. More places and material will join the archive as they are prepared.

Faces and gestures from encounters in 2014 and 2019. Each photograph offers a glimpse of someone whose life extends beyond the frame.
Prayer, ritual and quiet moments of contemplation in the shared spaces of the city.
People at work, in conversation and attending to the routines of a day. Familiar activities take on the character of the people living them.
The Ganges, ghats, courtyards and lanes: places of movement, gathering and pause.
Carrying, cutting, serving and selling: glimpses of people making a living in the lanes and along the ghats.
A child carried along the riverfront, shared care and moments of gathering. These photographs hold small exchanges without presuming the relationships beyond the record.
Children at doorways, on the steps and in motion: brief encounters from the 2014 and 2019 photographs.
Shops, vendor trays and flower offerings place exchange within the daily life of the city.
Riverfront buildings, narrow passages and an interior panorama reveal different scales of the city. Uncertain building identifications remain qualified in the captions.
Boats, prayer and the water’s edge bring different lives into contact with the Ganges.
This first selection follows evening Ganga aarti: flame, incense and people gathered at the riverfront.
