River and sacred presence

The Ganges, or Ganga, is both a major river system and a sacred presence in Hindu traditions. At Varanasi the river is central to prayer, bathing, offerings, pilgrimage and funerary rites. Religious language often personifies the river as the goddess Ganga.

The river in day-to-day life

Sacred meaning does not place the Ganges outside ordinary activity. Boats carry residents, pilgrims and visitors; people work along the shore; clothing is washed; people bathe and swim. Ritual, livelihood and recreation can occur within the same visual field.

A city seen from water

From the river, the compressed alleys of Varanasi open into a long architectural edge of ghats, temples, palaces, houses and public steps. The river therefore changes not only how people move through the city but how the city can be seen and photographed.

Environment and continuity

The Ganges is also an ecological system subject to intense human use and environmental pressures. Everyday Lives does not treat sacredness as evidence of environmental purity, nor environmental concern as a reason to dismiss religious meaning. Both dimensions belong to the contemporary river.

Photographing plurality

No single photograph can define the Ganges. The archive presents it as sacred river, workplace, route, public space, environmental reality and personal horizon, allowing apparently different meanings to coexist rather than forcing them into one interpretation.
